Soil and groundwater remediation in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania
Onesky Engineering, Inc. provided turnkey soil and groundwater remediation services for an urban brownfield site. The client was an independent oil company and gasoline retailer. Our firm worked closely with multiple stakeholders in the project, including the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, the Underground Storage Indemnification Fund, and the City of Lancaster.
Following groundwater investigation, subsurface soil investigation, geophysical surveying, aquifer testing, pilot testing, and a sensitive receptor survey, we custom-designed a vapor-enhanced groundwater extraction system with multiple pumps, a shallow tray air stripping unit, multiple regenerative blower soil vapor extraction units, and a thermal/catalytic oxidizer. The system both eliminated separate-phase petroleum and remediated on-site dissolved phase plume concentrations to below the non-used aquifer medium-specific concentrations in less than nine months. To allow for fast-track construction on the site, we demobilized the remediation system and built a secondary subsurface groundwater extraction header to address the potential for hydrocarbon rebound. With no observable rebound in on-site concentrations, we selected a risk-based corrective action approach to closure. The PADEP approved the clean up, and the site is in the attainment sampling demonstration period through 2007.
